Homesteading: DIY Laundry Detergent Powder

Laundry detergent can be OMG quite pricey eh…so why not make your own???

Most conventional laundry soaps can have negative effects on your health, including skin and throat irritation and carcinogenicity. You never truly know what ingredients could be omitted from a tag despite your attempt to make an informed decision.

I think it’s important to always keep yourself in check in terms of chemicals that are in contact with our bodies which is why homemade laundry detergent would be a great DIY project for you to try at home. These ingredients are easily available at your local grocery store.

This is another use for those batches of soap that didn’t  quite turn out the way you wanted. Please note however that if your soaps had heavy dyes or colours in it – it’s not a good idea to use that for this project. Best to keep those for DIY Bath wash!

It’s pretty simple.

DIY Laundry Detergent powder (RECIPE 1)

1 cup Soap (finely grated)

1 cup Borax powder

1 cup Washing Soda (not baking soda)

Directions: Mix all the ingredients together and keep in an air tight container.

To use: Use 1-2 tbsp per wash.

DIY BORAX FREE Laundry Detergent powder (RECIPE 2)

1 cup washing soda
½ cup Baking soda ½ cup
½ cup Citric acid
